Council Considers Fee Increases
CKNW Nafeesa Karim- March 25, 2010
Vancouver City Council is debating a controversial proposal to hike fees for city events.
The motion would implement a hundred dollar fee for non-profit and community events.
That's on top of any city services they might need such as policing or road closures.
The move would also mean a fifty dollar fee for anyone wanting to host a block party.
So far councillors don't seem to be too keen on the idea.
Vision Vancouver's Kerry Jang says it seems kind of mean-spirited to be hitting up neighbors for 50 dollars when things are already tight, and the same goes for community not-for-profit groups.
The motion includes fee hikes for film and television production companies.
The entire proposal would make the city over 100-thousand dollars which would fund the salaries of the two staffers who run the city's busy special events office.
