More Shelters On The Way

CKNW - January 04, 2010

Three more temporary or so-called "HEAT" shelters will be opening soon in Vancouver and one could be headed for Kitsilano.

Vision Vancouver Councilor Kerry Jang says City staff are looking at several sites but are concentrating on areas with known homeless populations.

He says they're working flat out to get as many open as quickly as possible, "Looking at places like Kitsilano where we know we have a population there, downtown south as well as in the west end as well."

Jang says the first HEAT shelter to open this winter in Mt. Pleasant has been at capacity with 40 people since day one, "As it turns out one of the fellows lived on top of the roof of where the shelter is now so he was quite pleased to go downstairs and inside."
